Men's Health Week: Connecting for Men's Health

This week is Men's Health Week, June 14-20 2021.

Each year in June, the international week raises awareness and provoke discussion about men's health, the contributing environmental factors to the state of male health in Australia, and how we can create positive environments for boys and men to improve male health in all its forms as a community.

The theme for 2021 is 'Connecting for Men’s Health', an especially important focus after the isolation of the past year.

According to research, 70% of a male individual's health can be controlled through lifestyle choices, such as increasing physical activity and fostering social connection.

Men in Glenferrie looking to improve their mental, social, and physical wellbeing can get involved in the local community in variety of ways.

The Hawthorn Men's Shed offers regular social events and activities as well as a woodworking workshop and gardening spaces, even a book club! It is located at 93 - 95 Elgin Street, Hawthorn behind the Uniting AgeWell Centre, and you can call 9815 0155 for more information.

Those looking to increase their social exercise through team sport can look into local sporting clubs such as the Hawthorn Amateur Football Club, a community passionate about mental health. They are hosting a luncheon on 27 June for 'Wings', the club's mental health fund and advocacy initiative aimed to raise awareness about mental health and provide direct support in the local community to prevent suicide.

There are also upcoming online social and fitness events being held by the City of Boroondara and national Men's Health Week organisation. Event details, information, and resources about men's health and the week can be found at: https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/
