Mother's Day: Did you know
Anna Jarvis organised the first Mother's Day celebration in 1908 as a way to honour mothers and the sacrifices they make for their families. After years of letter writing campaigns to newspapers and politicians, in 1914 Mother's Day became a national holiday in the United States of America. By 1920 Anna was horrified with how the holiday became commercialised. Until she died in 1948 she denounced the holiday and lobbied government to have it removed. Childless her entire life she spent most of her personal wealth on legal fees in lawsuits against groups that used the name "Mother's Day."
